El Cuerpo

Welcome to El Cuerpo!

El Cuerpo, which means "the body" in Spanish, strives to support the spiritual, physical, and educational needs of Latinos in our community of Wilmington, NC. We hope you will find a way to volunteer, participate, or serve in this ministry.

Our Name

El Cuerpo means "the body" in Spanish. We recognize that the body of Christ is diverse and multilingual. 1 Corinthians 12:26 says, "If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it." Therefore, we desire to unite as the body of Christ and build its people up by meeting the physical, spiritual, and mental needs of all members.

Our Vision

We aim to welcome the Latino community by supporting spiritual growth, physical and mental health, and education. We will serve Christ and our neighbors by obeying the call to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. (Micah 6:8).

Our Story

El Cuerpo was created as a way to serve and connect with our Latino neighbors and friends. In 2012, we began a very small tutoring program for Latino elementary school students. By 2017, the program had grown to close to 50 students ranging from PreK to 8th grade. El Cuerpo grew out of the after-school tutoring program as we began to see a need for more resources for our Latino friends.

Biblical Teaching

The heart of El Cuerpo is centered in our love for Jesus and sharing that with others. We desire everyone to know him and grow closer to him through biblical teaching. Join us for our 11:00am worship service on Sundays where Spanish translation is provided through headsets. Childcare is provided for children infant-2nd grade.

"Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples."
- Psalm 96:3

How Can I Get Involved in El Cuerpo?

After School Tutoring

We offer a weekly after-school tutoring program on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30pm. Students ranging from PreK-8th grade work with volunteers in small classroom groups on homework. Once homework is complete, remediation, academic skill development, and reading comprehension are the focus. A healthy snack and recreation time is provided each week. The tutoring program begins in September and runs through early May. If you would like a child to participate, contact Lizzy Cooper. If you would like to volunteer, fill out our quick and easy volunteer form here.

ESL (English as a Second Language)
Adult learners will have the opportunity to take an English as a Second Language class beginning in the fall. Childcare will be provided so that parents will be able to focus and learn. A Cape Fear Community College professor will teach the course and upon completion it can be counted towards a GED. This class is a semester long course and is free. Please check our El Cuerpo website for more information on dates and times. Contact Lizzy Cooper if you would like to sign up.
